Abstract Glass

This one is a bit more abstract than my usual work. A section of a glass window material that makes up part of the kitchen counter of a friend of mine. Macro, heavy work on contrast, and a slight warming filter.

Flower

I went for a half hour little walk in Lake Placid and the only shot without masses of people or cars that I got was this one thirty seconds into the trip. Came out ok, though, I used a cooling filter and dampened down any brighter colors in the background.

A scene I happened upon while taking a break from walking around Church Street in Burlington, Vermont.

Port Kent

Taken at the Port Kent ferry dock looking out at Lake Champlain. A macro shot focused a bit out to draw the eye to the mid-range of texture.

Strange Findings at the Fair

A sad looking fisherman I found on a bench in the middle of a rain shower. Macro with a cooling filter.

Monument

A little bit of an abstract view of the monument here in Plattsburgh. I tried to get some of the clothesline in the strip of black that was the building next to me.

Wine Night

A light use of a warming filter plus the shadow/highlight tool to bring out some of the texture of the material and the image of the bottle printed on it. I like using solid black sky for contrast.

Tracks

There isn't much story to this image except I was lost and came across a train crossing. Coincidently I got lost taking a long drive a couple weeks later and came across the same crossing from the other direction.

Nothing but blue sky..

A shot taken here in Plattsburgh at the boat basin. It was one of several test images, but most of the others were too busy with the masts of the sailboats. Bringing the boats into the shot only complicated the image, docks, people, etc.. So I decided to shoot at a different angle from a bit closer. The metal structure ended up being a bit dark so I raised the contrast to bring out the lettering.

Chess

An aluminum chess set, auto settings, shadow/highlight in Photoshop.

Dog's Eye View

Oh, I got a few odd looks for this one, but finally got the shot I was going for.

Cloudy Night

Aperture wide open, eight second exposure. It was still very dark so I had to do some post production to distinguish the sky from the trees. I was lost somewhere on a back road near Peru, NY.

Farm

When I first took this shot I assumed it wouldn't come out well due to how much zoom was involved. Without a tripod most shots I take at this distance come out blurry because even the slightest movement moves the whole shot by as much as a quarter of the whole image in any direction.

A nice woman at the pier just a bit beyond U.S. Oval here in Plattsburgh allowed me to take a few shots of her at the end of the evening.

Small Barn

A very small barn I found off route 22 here in Northern NY.

Abstract Angles

This is of a binocular viewing platform at the Point Au Roche state park. Of the several I took this one came into the best focus (my others set for macro weren't quite on) and coincidently this was the one I had turned the camera a few degrees to a drastically different angle. Minor post production to bring the washed out sidewalk a bit more into the image.

Riverbed

I used some contrast editing to bring out some detail. Lightroom was useful in adjusting the brightness of different portions of the image, drawing the eye to the mid-image area of light rocks.

Airport

This was of a plane being dismantled at the former Plattsburgh Airport. I found a trail in the background that fit well. Playing a bit with the saturation gave more texture to the aluminum.

Lettering

This shot was almost a loss, the detail of the wood grain in the lit area of the table was almost completely washed, and levels were impossible to isolate to the area so my only option was to adjust the image as a whole which was a far too blunt adjustment. Eventually I found Photoshop's shadow/highlight tool was just right for bringing out the detail in the lit portion of the shot. This was taken in the new "Smooth Moves" coffee shop on the corner of Broad and Durkee here in Plattsburgh.

Bicycle Night

One of the few shots I've done on this blog that include people. 1/4 of a second, no flash. I hope to work a bit more on spontaneous shots as opposed to my "as found scene" stuff.

This is my first piece that really uses aperture more than just for test work. A night shot near the marina here in Plattsburgh, NY.

On the Docks

Here's a shot that was originally done in black and white. I played with some color temp and some shading to get the final image. Its not quite sepia, but it isn't far off.

Flying Robots

This image is a bit different from my previous posts in a few ways. First off, rather than a lake, tree, or building, it is of flying robots. The other major difference is that I used three programs in post production. I used Lightroom for the vignettes (the darker corners), Photoshop for the general levels and contrast, and Picassa for the cool tones (the background was actually an off-white blank wall).

Union Falls Pond

This is a springtime shot taken just next to the Union Falls Dam near Silver Lake, New York. That's Whiteface Mountain just right of center with snow on top. Click on the panoramic shot to see a larger version.

A Return to Bright Colors

Yay for spring! Now I can actually do some real color work.. This I found down in the direction of U.S. Oval here in Plattsburgh. This home has a beautiful porch and the sun was just starting to set.

Brick

A shot here in Plattsburgh with the help of Adobe Lightroom for the edges. I was thinking of getting into HDR but I think I'll play around with less dramatic editing like this.

Willsboro Point

A shot at the point in Wilsboro, one of the most beautiful locations I've seen on Lake Champlain. The reflection is off water dripping from ice that was in the shade near the top of the rocks.

More Black and White by the Lake

This is a similar shot to the last one. I wanted to get one with a bit more ice in black and white before I switch back to doing mostly color when things get a bit greener. The bit of plane exhaust trail at the top of the one mast I can't claim as being intentional, as several people have asked.

Spring Trail

Well, I'm glad its spring, able to get out and take more pictures. This one I took this afternoon near the docks here in downtown Plattsburgh. The city is building a park on a stretch of land that was formerly just a trashy looking lot of land next to the lake. The unfinished look of the scene, notice the long strip of plastic sheeting used to stop erosion around the whole shoreline and the bare dirt throughout, makes this shot feel unique for me.

Dam II

This is the second shot of the Imperial Dam here in Plattsburgh that I've published on this page. The first was a panoramic framing the whole structure while the dam is more of a background piece in this one. I went back and forth on whether or not to remove the powerlines from the image but in the end decided they fit the industrial look of the buildings to the left. Both shots were taken the same evening in September.

Tree In The Park

This one is, in a way, similar to the shot of the Macdonough monument. Rather than a snowstorm, however, I took this one in a light fog. I've also been playing around a lot more with organic settings and subjects. More to come.

Holiday Train 2008

For the first time ever I saw the Christmas Train here in Plattsburgh. I ended up missing it pull into the station by just a minute or two but I still got some shots I liked. I chose this one because of the steam and the b/w feel around the image. I'm glad it started snowing not too long before or the shot wouldn't have much contrast nor would the rails be visible. The following two I chose because of the angles, though I also have several other good ones of the band that was on board with the crowd. I may put them up sometime soon if I feel it fits the blog.
